"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life"

 - King Solomon

REFERENCE
The Holy Bible (KJV), Proverbs 4:23

COMMENTARY
It is common to hear people say, "follow your heart" in matters of love and relationships. One of the most naive things that almost every human do is following the heart.

However, the above quote warns against following the heart. There are two main reasons why we don't have to follow our hearts. First, "out of the heart are the issues of life" and thus needs to be diligently kept(i.e. guided).

The second reason not to follow your heart is because "the heart is deceptive." The prophet Jeremiah stressed that, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked" (Jeremiah 17:9a).

Despite playing a very important role in our lives, the heart can also be our worst enemy, in that, it can deceive us. Our hearts can make us feel right about something when it reality such a thing may be wrong. For example, marriages that are built on only the dictations of the heart without the guidance of the mind often end in ruins.

In effect, the above quote is telling us to lead our hearts. Instead of following your heart, decide from today to make it subordinate to your mind.
